Why I Love Day Trips.

I find there to be something so magically exciting about a day trip. The ability to travel elsewhere, which can be so different from your current environment, yet you're still just a drive away.

To start off 2022, I was blessed to be able to take a day trip across the state over to Grand Haven, and while not that far from me geographically, the change in the pace of life overall was refreshing. Things seem to slow down when you go towards the water as if the strength of the waves works to calm our nervous systems. Seeing the waves crash down against the sand worked to calm me, and help me reset for the busy weeks to come.

One thing I found super interesting while exploring Michigan was to see people surfing in Lake Michigan while the sun set behind them, the ice water covering them as they swam out, fighting to catch a wave. My friend and I couldn't help but have a shocked look on our faces as we sat and watched them go, again and again, riding the waves as if the water was as warm as a pool in the summer. Even the sand had frozen, transforming from something that's fluid, into something as hard as a rock. The other fun thing about it all was how many people were out in the water. There's a whole community of people who are just doing the small things in life that bring them joy.

Which, in my eyes, is what day trips are all about. The ability to see what other people near us are doing, to be able to get out of our own heads, and to experience the small things that the world has to offer.

While this wasn't a resolution of mine to start off the year, maybe taking more day trips should be a goal of mine, and maybe of yours too... think of all the things that are within your reach that you haven't yet seen! Maybe next time, you'll be the one in the water too.
